Lisbon Pre-Tour: July 22-25, 2009

Discover the city of the explorers! Located on the right hand bank of the Tagus River, Lisbon is a city whose legendary history stretches more than twenty centuries. Experience the unique character of Lisbon's classically-styled downtown, rebuilt after the earthquake in 1755, and its adjoining medieval neighborhoods filled with an amazing array of stores, restaurants and cafés. You too will be filled with the spirit of discovery as you retrace the footsteps of Prince Henry the Navigator or Ferdinand Magellan.

Tour Itinerary
Wednesday, July 22nd - Lisbon
  • Participants arrive in Lisbon and are greeted by an Atlanta Travel Group representative.
  • Transportation to your hotel will be provided.
  • Explore Lisbon!  A half-day sightseeing tour of Lisbon departs at 2:00pm and includes visits to the Belem Tower, Padrao dos Desubrimentos and the Jeronimos Monastery. Next, we will head to the Alfama, as well as the Praça do Comercio and Baixa Lisboa.
  • Dinner will be served at a local restaurant after which participants will return to the hotel to relax on their own.
Thursday, July 23rd - Lisbon
  • Breakfast will be provided at the hotel.
  • This morning the tour will embark for Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its 19th century Romantic architecture. Sintra served as the summer residence of the Portuguese kings and the aristocracy for more than 600 years. 
  • Lunch will be provided at the Mar do Guinxo restaurant in Guinxo.
  • Afternoon sightseeing includes visits to Cabo da Roca, the western most point in
    Europe, and Cascais & Estoril, lively, cosmopolitan beach towns which retain a certain aristocratic atmosphere. Leaving Cascais, you will stop at the Boca do Inferno, a recess of the coast surrounded by rugged rocks and caves, providing a fantastic spectacle when the sea crashes against them on stormy days.
Friday, July 24th - Lisbon
  • Breakfast will be provided at the hotel.
  • Today you will visit several very special places starting with the town of Óbidos. Located on a hill and encircled by a fortified wall, this well preserved mediaeval looking village is enchanting.  Following your guided walking tour, you will have time for shopping and exploring on your own.  
  • After exploring Óbidos, the group will venture first to Portugal's largest church, the Alcobaça Monastery, and then to Nazare, a quaint fishing village nestled in a beautiful bay.
  • Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant.
  • Following lunch, the group will visit the Hermitage Church of the Nazarene before returning to Lisbon.
  • At 8:00 pm you will depart for dinner and traditional Portuguese entertainment at a Fado show at Sr Vinho Restaurant.
Saturday, July 25th - LIsbon & Barcelona
  • Breakfast will be provided at the hotel.
  • You will have some free time before departing for the airport at 12:00 noon.
  • Depart Barcelona on TAP Airlines flight 742 at 2:40 pm, arriving into Barcelona at 5:30 pm. 
  • Upon arrival to Barcelona, transportation to your hotel will be provided.

Bordeaux Post-Tour: July 30 - August 2, 2009

Relax after a successful conference and join us in Bordeaux! Located on the Garonne River in southwest France, Bordeaux is among the world's major wine industry centers and has produced wine in the region since the 8th century. The historic part of Bordeaux has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site which recognizes the beauty and the unity of style of Bordeaux's architectural heritage.

Tour Itinerary
Thursday, July 30th – Barcelona, Carcassonne & Bordeaux
  • Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before meeting an Atlanta Travel Group representative to depart via private motor coach from Barcelona to Bordeaux with a stop in Carcassonne.
  • Arrive at Carcassonne and enjoy a tour of what is considered the largest and most well-conserved medieval city in Europe. Carcassonne has 52 towers and two rings of town walls. The jewel of the city is the Saint Nazaire Cathedral, but you'll also have time to explore the local shops and craftsmen.
  • Lunch will be provided at the Hotel de la Cité Restaurant.  After lunch the group will continue via motor coach to Bordeaux.
  • Upon arrival in Bordeaux, you'll take in the sights with an afternoon city tour offering a panorama of the architectural trends of the city spanning from the middle Ages to present day. Passing over the Pont de Pierre bridge, you'll be transported to the right bank of the Garonne River, where you will be able to fully view the architectural unity of the sumptuous 18th century building facades.
  • Dinner will be provided at the Restaurant Le Chapon Fin.
Friday, July 31st – Bordeaux
  • Breakfast will be provided at the hotel.
  • Depart for a full day visit to Saint Émilion. Located less than one hour northeast of Bordeaux, this world-famous medieval city is not only known for its excellent wine but also for its Classified Historic Monuments and maze of charming streets in which you can stroll.
  • Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant.
  • After lunch you will embark on a winery tour and tasting.
  • After a full day of sightseeing, you will return to the hotel for an evening on your own.
Saturday, August 1st – Bordeaux
  • Breakfast will be provided at the hotel.
  • Participants will venture to Arcachon, a famous area of Bordeaux known for its Graves wine.  Enjoy a winery tour and wine tasting while overlooking the beautiful panoramic view of the Atlantic Sea.
  • After lunch you will embark on a unique boat tour where you'll discover Birds' Island. This small island is known for its "tchanquée" cabins (built on wooden stilts), the Arguin oyster banks and the magnificent surrounding scenery.
  • The tour will finish at La ville d'Hiver, composed of three lovely 19th century villages.
  • Return to the hotel to relax and refresh before dinner.
  • Savor your last evening in Bordeaux with dinner at Restaurant Lésquade.
Sunday, August 2nd – Bordeaux & Home
  • Breakfast will be provided at the hotel before departing for the airport or train station.
