Estonia and Virginia meet during league's 75th anniversary
During the 75th anniversary of the Virginia Credit Union League (VCUL), three representatives from the Estonia Union of Credit Cooperatives (EUCC) visited their US partner at their annual meeting to congratulate them on their success and plan for the future of their partnership. VCUL's partnership committee, chaired by Juri Valdov Senior Vice-President of External Affairs of Northwest Federal Credit Union, presented on the activities and progress made in the partnership in 2008 during the business meeting at the annual meeting. EUCC was also presented with an award during the banquet following the meetings to commemorate their relationship.
In addition to the annual meeting, the Estonian delegates also had the opportunity to visit two credit unions, Fairfax County Federal Credit Union and Northwest Federal Credit Union. During these visits, the partners were able to further refine the focus areas of the league partnership in areas such as clearing centers and deposit insurance.
The delegation ended their visit by travelling to Washington, D.C. for a meeting with CUNA executives to discuss the US credit union system, how it is organized and the challenges it currently faces. CUNA executives participating in the meeting were Dan Mica, President and CEO; Mary Dunn, Deputy General Counsel; Pat Sowick, VP League Relations; Michael Edwards, Counsel for Special Projects; Phil Drager, Manager of State Advocacy; and Mark Wolff, Senior VP & Chief Communications Officer.
The Estonia delegation consisted of Andrus Ristkok, chairman of EUCC; Maria Peldes, director of EUCC and Linda Sossi, director of EUCC.
A delegation from Tartu Credit Union in Estonia will be meeting with VCUL and Virginia credit unions in July of 2009 for a week-long study tour. The credit union delegation will be exploring key growth areas, including product evolution, branding, credit union staff development, and electronic services through credit union visits and meetings with credit union and league executives.
