Two Massachusetts credit union representatives traveled to the Bahamas recently to meet with their partners through World Council of Credit Unions' (WOCCU) International Partnership Program. Bernie Winne, CEO of Boston Firefighters Credit Union and first vice-chairman of the Massachusetts Credit Union League Board of Directors, and Paula Dion, vice-president of member services of the Massachusetts Credit Union League, were responding to a request by the Bahamas Cooperative League to assist in their Co-operative Forum and also meet with the Central Bank on a lobbying mission.
The representatives first participated in a managers' roundtable at the Bahamas league offices along with William Foster, vice-president of Deposit Insurance Corporation of Ontario, Canada. Several credit union managers were present as the group discussed best practices in the U.S. and Canada on a variety of topics. In the afternoon, the delegation made a courtesy call to the Governor of the Central Bank to educate on the differences between banks and credit unions.
The Bahamas Cooperative League 2010 Co-operative Forum took place the next day. Winne presented a session entitled "Credit Union Strategies to Grow and Prosper in 2010 and beyond." The representatives also participated in break out groups discussing what credit unions should do to better serve their members and achieve their membership growth goals. They were also invited to attend the league's 31st Annual General Meeting the next day.
