Partnerships & Volunteers // WOCCU Volunteer Teaches Belize CUs About Risk-Based Lending and Finding Opportunities in Economic Recessions

2009/10/18

Throughout 2009, many overseas credit unions and credit union organizations have expressed a need for US credit union speakers to present on the US economy and how it has affected credit unions. WOCCU received one of these requests from the Belize Credit Union League (BCUL) for its AGM during ICU Day week. As a WOCCU volunteer, Carlyn Roy, COO of OSU Federal Credit Union of Oregon, made the trip to Belize City, Belize to present on the popular topic and lead a workshop on risk management and risk-based lending at the league's AGM.

In her presentation, Roy concluded that although the economic crisis will affect credit unions in terms of increased delinquency and decreased earnings, the current financial market also presents an opportunity for future growth and for tapping into new markets. Roy followed her presentation with a Q & A session on US credit union operations. The annual convention touted a total of 186 participants and 60 attendees participated in Roy's workshop. Southwest Corporate Credit Union of Plano, TX and BCUL have been partnered through WOCCU's International Partnerships program since 2008. BCUL is affiliated with WOCCU through its membership in the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions, a WOCCU member.
