MADISON, Wis. — World Council of Credit Unions' (WOCCU) Spanish Immersion Program is offering a discounted early bird registration rate through July 6. Credit union staff interested in learning how to better attract and serve Hispanic members can save US$100 by registering on or before this date.

The U.S. Hispanic population is largely unbanked and the FDIC projects that Hispanics will account for more than half of the U.S. retail banking growth in the coming decade. Many credit unions looking for growth opportunities are seeking to serve Hispanics in their area. The Spanish Immersion Program is a total immersion experience that provides participants valuable insight into the language and culture of the Hispanic market.

The program, which takes place this year in San José, Costa Rica, includes four hours each day of Spanish language instruction at a certified language school, with an emphasis on business and financial terminology. Participants will be able to apply what they learn from language classes in a real-world setting while living with pre-screened Costa Rican host families. The host family will provide a private room and all meals to the participant, along with the experience of being a part of a Hispanic family. To get a hands-on feeling of how to best serve Hispanic credit union members, participants will also complete an internship at a Costa Rican credit union.

The 2010 program begins October 2. Participants can choose either a one- or two-week session priced at US$1,700 and US$2,500, respectively. Prices are good through July 6. The two-week program offers participants more time to gain greater proficiency in their language instruction and to experience an internship better suited to their specific needs.

For those interested in completing the International Credit Union Development Education (I-CUDE) training, the Spanish Immersion Program is one of the four qualifying steps to successful completion. Click here to learn more about the I-CUDE designation.
