Pima FCU Nathanael Tarwasokono (top left) will be sending eight young staff members and high school youth advisors to WOCCU's WYCUP Scholarship Program, including (back row, from left) Beatrice Vidal, Raul Munguia, Kathie Lorenz, Kristina Lopez, Gabriel, Sergio Leyva, (front row, from left) Caroline Barragan and Rosie Leyva. The decision was based on the experience Tina Slachta (front row, on right) had attending the same program in 2008.

TUCSON, Ariz. — When Tina Slachta, director of risk management for Pima Federal Credit Union (PFCU), attended World Council of Credit Union's (WOCCU) 2008 World Credit Union Conference in Hong Kong, the young professional said she came away transformed.

"It was life changing," said Slachta, who had participated in the WOCCU Young Credit Union People (WYCUP) Scholarship Program at the international event. "It sparked a fire in my professional life for my organization and for the credit union movement."

PFCU CEO Nathanael Tarwasokono noticed the impact that WYCUP had on Slachta, which gave him an idea of how to reward top performers in the credit union's Individuals Making Pima a Community Tool (IMPACT) program. The team of eight young credit union employees and two high school youth advisors, who did everything from teaching students financial literacy to feeding needy families Thanksgiving dinner, will be rewarded with an all-expense-paid trip to The 1 Credit Union Conference in Las Vegas, Nev., USA, this coming July to participate in the 2010 WYCUP Scholarship Program.

"It's critical to give the younger generation a global credit union perspective and set them on the right philosophical path," Slachta said. "The WYCUP program is especially designed for this encouragement."

Slachta's efforts were ahead of the curve. In its commitment to ensuring the future sustainability of the international credit union system by recognizing and promoting its next generation of leaders, WOCCU is now calling for nominations for this year's WYCUP program. The deadline for all nominations is Monday, June 7, 2010.

The WYCUP Scholarship Program seeks individuals who have already made significant contributions to the development of their own credit unions, regional or national credit union systems and have demonstrated the potential to employ their unique talents at the international level. Credit unions and credit union organizations that are WOCCU members are encouraged to nominate their next generation of leaders to compete for the WYCUP Scholarship.

To be eligible for the scholarship, nominees must: 1) be sponsored by their credit union or credit union organization to attend The 1 Credit Union Conference — a combination of WOCCU's World Credit Union Conference and CUNA's America's Credit Union Conference — in Las Vegas in July; 2) be 35 years of age or younger on January 1, 2010; and 3) submit a completed nomination form with all the necessary supporting materials to WOCCU no later than June 7, 2010.

The WYCUP Scholarship, which consists of an all-expense-paid trip to the 2011 World Credit Union Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, will be awarded to five recipients at 2010 Las Vegas conference. All WYCUP nominees, regardless of award status, will be formally recognized in Las Vegas and invited to take part in events and networking sessions organized specifically for participants under age 35. Conference registrants age 35 and under also qualify for a discounted registration fee regardless of whether or not they compete for the scholarship.

"Our credit union strongly believes in WOCCU's mission and we are delighted to be involved with such an organization," Tarwasokono said. "We hope to ignite in our employees a passion for the credit union movement that we believe will energize them to better serve our members and communities."
