The World Council of Credit Unions newsroom is designed to provide you with easy access to educational and informational resources about the organization, its mission and the global credit union movement. World Council is the only organization representing credit unions in developed and developing countries on a global scale and we hope our Newsroom will become your key to understanding the operations and potential of this exciting movement.

Who we are

World Council of Credit Unions is the global trade association and development agency for credit unions. World Council promotes the sustainable development of credit unions and other financial cooperatives around the world to empower people through access to high quality and affordable financial services. World Council advocates on behalf of the global credit union system before international organizations and works with national governments to improve legislation and regulation. Its technical assistance programs introduce new tools and technologies to strengthen credit unions' financial performance and increase their outreach.

2011 was a year of renewal for World Council of Credit Unions, an effort that will carry it forward into the future. New members, increased development efforts and a growing emphasis on remote technology service delivery were among the achievements highlighted in the 2011 Annual Report.

Statistical Report


Credit union organizations from 100 countries provided data for World Council's 2011 Statistical Report. The report shows an estimated 196 million people worldwide are served by 51,013 financial cooperatives.

World Council's development programs are highlighted regularly in the Technical Guide series, designed to inform readers about the unique situations and challenges each World Council program presents, as well as chronicling each program's achievements.


Model Law & Regulations for Credit Unions


Model Law for Credit Unions provides a sample legislative framework to aid in preparing and seeking approval of laws.

Guide to International Credit Union Legislation contains credit union legislative and regulatory summaries for over 100 countries and political provinces.

Model Regulations


Model Regulations for Credit Unions provides a starting point for implementing quality regulatory standards for credit unions. It is based on World Council's extensive international development experience and documented best practices. The regulation matrix contains real world examples of regulations from 18 developing and developed credit union sectors.


Research


Research monographs present the findings of credit union research and studies carried out through World Council's credit union development activities.

International Credit Union Principles

Swarna Hettiarachchi has been a farmer for 35 years and a member of the Women's Coop Ruwaneliya branch since it was first established nine years ago. Her husband and one of her two sons also work on the five-acre family farm, while her other son works on a neighboring farm. They have diversified their crops by cultivating potatoes, carrots, leeks, beets and cabbage. Swarna recently obtained a 100,000 LKR (US$900) loan to expand her potato crop, most of which will be sold as seed to a government potato research center.

Pollok Credit Union in Glasgow, Scotland, is partnered with a local post office, offering the convenience of combined services. The manager of the credit union is the local postmaster, and the employees of both organizations are being cross-trained to better serve members and customers.
