WOCCU Joins ICA in Promoting Environmentally Neutral Practices

July 03, 2008

MADISON, Wis.—World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) is joining with the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the United Nations to celebrate International Cooperative Day on July 5 by encouraging its member organizations to embrace operational practices that have a neutral impact on the environment. WOCCU supports ICA's theme of "Confronting Climate Change through Co-operative Enterprise."

"WOCCU has been taking steps to implement sustainable labor and environmental practices as part of overall operating procedures for its World Credit Union Conference," said Pete Crear, president and CEO of WOCCU. "For example, we are reducing paper usage through the electronic publishing of conference materials and presentations and using meeting supplies and attendee giveaways produced from recycled materials."

Special sessions at the 2008 World Credit Union Conference, which will convene July 13-16 in Hong Kong, will look at ways that credit unions and other financial cooperatives are addressing environmentally related issues.

ICA's initiative is part of the Geneva, Switzerland-based organizations' partnership with the United Nations Environment Program's Climate Neutral Network. ICA and WOCCU are committed to the UN Global Compact "Caring for the Climate" action platform that promotes environmental neutrality whenever possible. On its Website, ICA notes that credit unions and financial cooperatives worldwide have already begun taking steps by offering incentives to invest in energy-efficient technology through competitive mortgage, consumer and business loans.

"Equally, if not more important are actions taken on a daily basis by large and small cooperatives who are conscious that every effort, no matter how small, can contribute to slowing climate change impacts," ICA's Web statement adds.
