World Council, ENCU, EUCUPIG Call for COVID-19 Regulatory Relief

WASHINGTON—World Council of Credit Unions (World Council), the European Network of Credit Unions (ENCU) and the European Union Credit Union Parliamentary Interest Group (EUCUPIG) in two separate letters called for regulatory relief to allow credit unions in the European Union (EU) to play a critical role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Credit unions have a history of providing critical services through disasters, emergencies and other disruptions by providing direct assistance to their members.

Credit Unions Once Again Ranked as Ireland’s Most Trusted Organizations

DUBLIN—Credit unions have been named the most highly regarded organizations in Ireland according to the latest Ireland RepTrak® 2020 study carried out by The Reputations Agency. With a score of 83.7, credit unions took the top spot overall for their role as a trusted cornerstone of local communities with over 3.6 million members nationwide. This represents a return to the top spot for credit unions who finished second in last year’s poll after having come first in 2018.

‘Inspiring Hope for a Global Community’ is This Year’s International Credit Union Day Theme

MADISON, Wis.—On October 15, 2020, credit unions worldwide will be celebrating International Credit Union Day (ICU Day). Celebrated for the first time in 1948, this annual event raises global awareness for the credit union movement through outreach, volunteering, fundraising and other ICU Day-themed activities. Credit unions bring financial inclusion and a promising future to people all over the world, and ICU Day is a chance to spotlight and celebrate these achievements.

Credit Unions Must Be Considered “Essential” During COVID-19 Crisis

MADISON, Wis.—World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) is calling on national-level authorities and regulators to ensure that credit unions are properly designated as “essential” during the COVID-19 crisis. Some jurisdictions do not currently include credit unions in the definition of essential, even though this classification has been extended to banks.

International standard setting bodies concerned with the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the global banking system are all responding with guidance to assist credit unions in providing critical financial services during the crisis. World Council of Credit Unions called for regulatory flexibility early on to help credit unions meet the financial needs of their members during the crisis.
