African Credit Unions Seek Common Ground in Caucus
2025-07-15The African Confederation Of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA), in partnership with WOCCU, brought together key stakeholders on Tuesday for an Africa Caucus at WCUC 2025.
An overflow crowd of credit union professionals and national regulators, that included Hon Wycliffe A. Oparanya, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and MSME Development in Kenya, discussed “Current Trends of SACCO Development and Growth.”
George Ombado, Executive Director of ACCOSCA, said the continent as a whole has increased its level of professionalism in business over the past few years, and credit unions are no exception in that regard. But he emphasized a need for financial cooperatives to reduce competition.
"When you talk about cooperation, talk about collaboration, it's not just an aesthetic choice, but it is a moral imperative for us to find a way to work together," said Ombado.
Paul Treinen, interim President and CEO of WOCCU, told the group he sees great opportunity for the credit union movement in Africa.
"And I just want you to know we stand here with you. We're very committed to you, both from the World Council side but also the (Worldwide) Foundation side," said Treinen.
