Theme Selected for International Credit Union Day 2022

74th anniversary celebration is set for Thursday, Oct. 20

July 27, 2022

MADISON, Wis.—“Empower Your Financial Future with a Credit Union™” is the theme of this year’s International Credit Union (ICU) Day, to be celebrated Thursday, October 20, 2022.

This annual event raises global awareness for the credit union movement through outreach, volunteering, fundraising and other ICU Day-themed activities. Credit unions bring financial inclusion and a promising future to people all over the world. Since the first celebration in 1948, ICU Day is a chance to spotlight and celebrate these achievements.

International Credit Union Day is brought to you by World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and Credit Union National Association (CUNA)—WOCCU's direct member organization in the United States.

This year’s theme—Empower Your Financial Future with a Credit Union™—is one that could not be timelier, according to WOCCU President and CEO Elissa McCarter LaBorde.

“There are still 1.4 billion people across the globe who are unbanked. Credit unions truly have the perfect business model to empower their financial future and that is a message we hope our entire global movement will celebrate and promote on Thursday, October 20,“ said McCarter Laborde.

ICU Day 2022 materials, including this year’s logo, poster and coloring page are now available at woccu.org/icuday.

EMPOWER campaign

New in 2022, Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions (WFCU) is launching the “EMPOWER” campaign, a peer-to-peer fundraising and story-sharing effort which encourages U.S. credit unions to participate in helping to expand member empowerment on a global scale through international credit union development.

From October 1-20, EMPOWER hopes to engage at least one credit union from each U.S. state to collectively raise $500,000 to grow the international credit union movement through the work of World Council. Through EMPOWER, WFCU also hopes to collect and share 100 stories of member empowerment locally, nationally and internationally across social media.

More materials available through CUNA

CUNA also offers no-cost and fee based creative bundles designed to educate consumers about the value credit unions provide. For-fee resources include:

  • Design Bundle (allows credit union customization on posters, videos etc.)
  • Customized Video
  • Celebrations Store (t-shirts, cups, piggy banks and more)

“Ultimately our goal is for more people to understand the important role credit unions play in their community,” said Megan Crowson, manager of consumer engagement for CUNA. “If we can encourage someone to reach out to a credit union for help on their financial journey, then this program was a success!”
