Polish Credit Unions Step Up to Support Ukrainians
2022-03-09The National Association of Cooperative Savings and Credit Unions (NACSCU), World Council’s direct member association in Poland, has wasted no time in coordinating efforts to assist Ukrainians in need in both countries.
NACSCU appointed a special team of employees to coordinate aid initiatives with the Ukrainian consul in Gdansk, Poland, so that needed items could be sent to those facing a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
To date, NACSCU has worked to send everything from blankets, sleeping mats, warm clothing, flashlights and batteries through the consul and on to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. A second shipment to Odessa, a major port city in the south of Ukraine, has also been prepared with similar items.
Individual credit unions in Poland are also working to provide relief.
SKOK Kwiatkowski has committed to helping a group of children from war-affected areas that are now at an orphanage in Tarnów, Poland.
In conjunction with a local Catholic relief agency, SKOK Kasy Blachnickiego is collecting and transporting medical items and supplies directly to a warehouse in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, where they are being distributed to Ukrainians most in need.
SKOK Chmielewski employees made a quick collection of necessary items to help Ukrainian refugees sleep comfortably in the City Hall of Lublin, Poland. The credit union is also collecting mattresses and sleeping bags for a church in Lviv, Ukraine, where about 200 people who were wounded on the war’s frontlines have been sent to recover.
NACSCU and its network of credit unions will continue to provide relief efforts in both Ukraine and Poland as long as the need exists.
